Hucklbery Finn persuasive essay Essay Example for Free
Hucklbery Finn persuasive essay EssayAdventures of Huckleberry Finn and Offensive Langu eon in Literature In Mark Twains sheer 1884 novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, regional and time-specific language is expenditured in a mood that offends some 21st century readers. Particular banters argon so worrisome that individuals across the country are still, to this solar day, attempting to have the book banned in schools and libraries. The idea that any book should be tucked away in a vault, let alone an example of a beloved Ameri bear untainted such as this, is ludacris and against what America stands for. Works of art, like this book, should be used to square up and to open up dialogue and analysis on both the piece itself and the society from which it came. With this particular Twain novel, we should be having a discussion about why the offending rowing are so offensive, and why its important that a record of these words and attitudes exist. Words carry burden, and the weight of the N word in Huckleberry Finn is heavy and dripping with sordid history. It is a term that holds an impassable amount of cultural appropriation and painful association. The word, used in a classic literary context, is then a perfect way to open up a dialogue about issues that are difficult to talk about. Political correctness, racial slurs, Americas dark pastthese are all progenys that can be used to teach young people how to have a drear conversation about a torrid subject matter. Instead of banning the book and ignoring the past, we should be embracing the story and teaching people how to deal with the words in a tactful and progressive way. Moving forward from Americas shameful history of racism is difficult and taxing. But the only way we make steps to a new and more(prenominal) comfortable future is to learn from our past mistakes. Twain was a product of his time, putting words into the mouths of his characters that would good have come from the mouths of real peop le. Its withal important to remember that the character of Huck Finn himself is anti-racist, so teaching the book to young people is not teaching racism, but acceptance. It is imperative to connect with the period of history that Huckleberry Finn comes from because shoving it to the side will only render us blind.Banning books is an effective way to censor, and censorship goes against a lot of what Americans believe to be a very important personal right. The right to free speech is sacred, and it is mostly untouched even in circumstances where highly polarizing or hateful words are being used. A work of fiction that integrates dialogue containing the N word whitethorn search hateful to some, but it is certainly the intention of the author to use it in a context of satire. Censorship will just close the book when what we rightfully imply is to open it up in a different light. At a time when it is nearly impossible to find an adult engaged in a healthy debate or discussion, teachi ng our children how to rally and speak analytically and fairly is a dire need. Using fictional novels such as Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a jumping-off point of what used to be, and what has become, is the perfect opportunity for creating the ability to do this. By keeping books deemed controversial in rotation and out of the vault, we can begin to understand the preciousness of our own rights to speak our mind, as well as being able to speak to others with respect and with knowledge of the past.Downloaded from http//www. wikihow. com There are three possible organization patterns recipe 1 Thesis statement PRO idea 1 PRO idea 2 filch(s) + Refutation(s) Conclusion Pattern 2 Thesis statement CON(s) + Refutation(s) PRO idea 1 PRO idea 2 Conclusion Pattern 3 Thesis statement CON idea 1Refutation CON idea 2Refutation CON idea 3Refutation Conclusion Thesample essayhas been scripted according to the third pattern. HEALTH AND HEALING AT YOUR FINGERTIPS Throw out the bottles and boxes of drugs in your house.A new theory suggests that medicine could be bad for your health, which should at least come as good news to people who cannot afford to buy expensive medicine. However, it is a ampere-second to the medicine industry, and an even bigger blow to our confidence in the progress of science. This new theory argues that healing is at our fingertips we can be healt hy by doing Reiki on a regular basis. Supporters of medical treatment argue that medicine should be trusted since it is effective and scientifically proven. They say that there is no need for spiritual methods such as Reiki, Yoga, Tai Chi.These waste our time, something which is quite precious in our material world. There is medicine that can kill our pain, x-rays that show us our fractured bones or MRI that scans our brain for tumors. We must admit that these methods are very effective in the examples that they provide. However, there are some every day complaints such as back pains, headaches, insomnia, which are treated currently with medicine. When you have a headache, you take an Aspirin, orVermidon, when you cannot sleep, you takeXanaxwithout thinking of the side effects of these. When you use these pills for a long period, you become addicted to them you cannot sleep without them. We pay huge amounts of money and become addicted instead of getting better. How about a safer and more economical way of healing? When doing Reiki to yourself, you do not need anything except your energy so it is very economical. As for its history, it was discovered injapanin the early 1900s and its popularity has spread particularly throughoutAmericaandWestern Europe. In quantum physics, energy is recognized as the fundamental substance of which the universe is composed. Reiki depends on the energy within our bodies. It is a simple and effective way of restoring the energy flow. There are no side effects and it is scientifically explained. Opponents of alternative healing methods also claim that serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS and cancer cannot be treated without drugs. They think so because these patients spend the rest of their lives in the hospital taking medicine. How can Reiki make these people healthy again? It is very unfortunate that these patients have to live in the hospital losing their hair because of chemotherapy, losing weight because of the side effects of th e medicine they take.Actually, it is common knowledge that except for when the cancer is diagnosed at an early stage, drugs also cannot treat AIDS or cancer. Most of themedicinethese patients use are to ease their pain and their sufferings because of the medical treatment they undergo. Instead of drugs which are expensive and have many side effects, you can use your energy to overpower the hardships of life, find an emotional balance, leave the stress of everyday life and let go of the everyday worries. Most of the chronic conditions such as eczema or migraine are known to have causes such as poor diet and stress. Deep-rooted anger or other strong emotions can contribute to viral infections as well. Since balancing our emotions and controlling our thoughts are very important for our well-being, we should definitely start learning Reiki and avoid illnesses before it is too late. Some people may still maintain that in our material world, everything depends on time. It is even lacking time that causes much of the stress that leads to the illnesses we mentioned. How would it be possible to find time to do Reiki to ourselves and the people around us when we cannot even find time to go to the theater? This is one good thing about Reiki it does not require more than 15 minutes of our time. There is no need for changing clothes or special equipment. It is a wonderfully simple healing art, an effective method of relaxation and stress-relief. Most important of all, it is less time consuming than medicine if we think of all the time we spend taking medicine for some complaints and taking some more for the side effects as well.Having said these, resistance to Reiki would be quite illogical. Reiki is natural and drug-free. What is more, it is easy to learn by anyone, regardless of age and experience. Itcan be used anywhere, anytime. It also enhances physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being and the benefits last a lifetime. It is definitely high time to get away from the drug boxes we store in our drug cabinet _________________________________________________________________________ utline I Introduction/Thesis-Claim Body carve up1 vex your 1st point and supporting evidence.Body Paragraph 2 Present your 2nd point and its supporting evidence. Hyatt Walkway EssayIn Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, in 1981, connections supported the ceiling rods holding up the second and the quarter floor walkways has failed and collapsed and fell down on the first floor where was so crowded then and resulted in 114 deaths and over 200 injuries. Beside of the loss of lives, this collapse left(a) millions dollars in cost behind and a number of principals lost their engineer licenses and number of firms went bankruptcy. As for the events triggered this collapse affecting the thousands of people adversely, the most critical and of the essence(p) factor was the change of the design of the hanger rod connections from one-rod to two-rod system to make the assembly task simpler doubling the load on the connector. Improper design utilizing abrupt subdivision changes, resulting in stress concentrations Degradation of materials in a connection. Improper design due to lack of consideration of all forces acting on a connection, particularl y those associated with volume changes. Lack of consideration of large residual stresses resulting from manufacture or fabrication. These are the most important structural factors caused of the walkway collapse. And it is resulted from the conflictual and controversial communication in the midst of the Havens Steel Company and G.C.E International Inc. This can be deemed as the most important factor triggered the walkway collapse because of the fact that these two professional plan companies obviously were not able to communicate each other in professional bounders and havent acted in a responsible way and soundless the importance of the job they were doing.G.C.E International Inc., Daniel M. Duncan and Jack D. Gillum is the most blame for walkway collapse because of charging gross negligence, incompetence, misconduct and unprofessional conduct in the practice of engineering in connection with their performance of engineering services in the design and construction of the Hyatt Reg ency Hotel. G.C.E International Inc. bears the most responsibility because of the fact that they were the responsible one on design changing and they were failed on final check step by approving the design change opinion by the Havens Company and they have failed on it. G.C.E International Inc. and Havens Company were involved in key decisions because of the fact that Havens Company proposed the design change on as mentioned above and G.C.E International Inc. accepted this tin after receiving the shop drawings.

Napster and Appleââ¬â¢s Ipod Essay Example for Free
Napster and Apples Ipod EssayThis paper deals with a through case study of the euphony persistence in the face of change indoors the age of the Internet with the major focus on Napster and Apples ipod.In 2000 Shawn Fanning founded Napster a file sharing program where people could download medication for free and access the songs they have downloaded at any hour of the day. moreover, in 2000, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and a number of the big chore recording labels argued that Napster was violating copyright laws, facilitating the illegal copying and distribution of copyrighted music. (Hill, 1)After Napster was in the lime light for allowing people to harbour advantage of free downloads, companion sharing technologies such as Kazaa were just coming into play where people were able to download music in a similar fashion. In genuinely short order after Napsters service was shut down, a number of new file sharing services started to rapidly gain users. (Hill, 11)However there was one slight difference here, people were downloading through other peoples computers and not accessing the files via a central server and therefore it became punishing to stop this practice from taking place. The music industry responded as it had with Napster, filing lawsuits in attempt to shut down the services for copyright violation. But in this case it was more difficult to prove infringement. (Hill, 11)Within the last 20 years since CDs have been in vogue the music industry has changed. People have differing opinions regarding whether one is better than the other. It was Apples ipod and the Itunes online music service that revolutionized the music industry. These were the programs and applications that allowed you to purchase and bear in mind to whatever you want but at the same time protect the artists that wrote and produced the music. It is important to look at the growth in the music recording industry since these changes took place and to see what the results and changes have been. at that place was strong growth in the music recording industry in the 90s. However, when the 2000s hit global sales dropped by 5% and continue to drop for the next three years. Many people have been blaming this negative trend on Napster. In 2003 sales dropped to a low of $32 trillion in 2003.In the early 90s the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) was concerned about consumers burning songs downloaded over the Internet onto CDs.This was such an easy process to do as you could download the files you wished to place on your CD from Napster and use a program by which you can copy CDs. This concern was important to take into consideration because of the sheer amount of songs that were downloaded over the Internet for free and if people were downloading the songs they were not get the CDs from their favorite(a) artists. There is a large cost in promoting an artist and the use of copyrighted material makes this p rocess even more expensive for the artist as not as many people will be purchasing the CDs. People would be more likely to download the songs instead of purchasing them because it is cheap (free) and easy.In the past, the music industry has always been concerned about the potential for piracy of copyrighted material. However, another trend that raised copyright infringement issues was MP3- compressed digital files that could be downloaded for free from the Internet. At the point where Napster was going through the courts certain lobbying groups were concerned with websites where people could download free MP3 files and in doing that listen to pirated music. The RIAA tried to shut down Napster because of piracy and the laws that the company had broken. During this time the music industry also tried to develop technology that would protect digital audio recordings from piracy and counterfeiting. The main problem in regard to Napster and the piracy issue is to do with the fact that Naps ters service was violating copyright, facilitating massive piracy of intellectual airscrew and consequently stealing. There were talks about a paid subscription service to be created by Napster in 2001 but nothing ended up coming into fruition and on September 2, 2002, Napster announced its liquidation. It is clear to see why Napster has such an appeal to its audience given the fact that it was free and people could download any song that they wanted. In todays environment people can still access peer-sharing websites however sometimes songs may be pen down under a search engine listing and may even be a computer virus. Itunes is therefore giving users and artists the best of both(prenominal) worlds consumers get to download the songs they want even if it is only one song off a particular album and the artist gets compensated for it.All in all, it is clear to see the vast changes that have taken place over the last decade or more and the fact that significant changes will take pla ce in the future. The growing popularity and vast information available on the Internet is going to change the way people purchase and listen to music and people need to be aware of this as the world changes everyday and nothing lasts forever.ReferencesHill, Charles W, The music industry in the age of the Internet from Napster to Apples Ipod.

A Study Of Lewins Model Management Essay
A Study Of Lewins molding guidance EssayIn the refreezing stage the company stabilized transfigures by establishing schemas that nookie establish behavioural pattern in the organisation. A peeled performance appraisal system based on behaviour and results was introduced to encourage customer service. (Goodstein., D., L. Burke, W., W., 1991) 14It is not easy for an organisation deviate its structure and business functioninges since any trade may lead to some direct of resistance by the employees. wizard of the main causes for resistance is the fear of the unknown and loss of what is familiar. There argon quartette reasons of resistance from employee to organisational mixed bag including 1) Parochial self-interest, 2) Misunderstanding and lack of trust, 3) Contradictory assessments, and 4) natural depression tolerance for interpolate. (Buchanan D. Huczynski A., 2004) BA tried to flip-flop behaviour by changing the vigilance style from authoritative to participative. B A wished employees participate more in charge decision but since this was unfamiliar employers would f only back to the old patterns. 15A tactics that was use in BA to manage resistance to qualifying was the HR policy which included training guidelines. Such an HR policy is heavy in making the employees understand and react positively to change. There is withal an example where resistance to change hindered the organisations goals and objectives. In an attempt to cut down speak to plunder compete with low cost circulariselines BA tried implementing a new payment system and besides hiring workers for lower salaries. This created insecurity among the employees which ended in a strike that cost the company in one thousand millions in 2000. so handling resistance and the HR aspects of the company is vital to a triple-crown change process. 15REFERENCES 16Wilson, C.D., (1992), A Strategy of Change, Thomas Learning, London 16British Airways, 2006, Leaders For Business What are w e looking for?, http//www.british get offwaysjobs.com/baweb1/?newms=info196 (22 December 2006)British Airways, 2006, Our Recruitment Process The Assessment Process, http//www.britishairwaysjobs.com/baweb1/?newms=info48 (22 December 2006) 16Paton, R.A. One of the goals of change management is to reduce resistance to change in order for organizational members accept the change and thereby achieve the organizations goal of a smooth transformation.Change management open fire be seen to hasten five specific stages that must be realized for an organisation to be successfully implementing change. foremost the organisation must know why a specific change or series should be brought about. Secondly the organisation must be cause and desire to go through this particular change. Thirdly the organisation must posses the knowledge of how to carry out the change. Fourthly the organisation must acquire new skills and behaviours that are necessary for the chan ge to occur. Lastly the organisation must become sustainable by making these new behaviours their usual practice. moreover according to Wilson (1992) change can occur mainly in two dimensions depending on the theories and models used. This view explains that change can be either planned or unplanned. Also change can be described in terms of the process or performance strategy. The issues of understanding and managing change within an organisation depend on the change approach that is selected by the organisation.Organisational StructureBritish Airways operates as a group of companies whose main industry sectors are international and domestic scheduled and charter air services carrying passengers, freight and mail as well as providing supplementary services. The group consists of British Airways Plc and a number of subsidiary companies, including British Airways Holidays Ltd, British Airways pass away Shops Ltd etc. The two main operating bases of the company are Heathrow and Gat wick airports and has established in branches around the world. The company is listed in several stock exchanges including LSE, Munich, US etc. British airways together with its partnerships have managed to extend its network thus entering all significant markets. As for the structure of BA, it has suffered a shift from modern to tell on modern to post modern organisational structure i.e. it has moved from mechanistic to more organic style of operation. The operations of BA can be analysed departmentally into Planning, dispersion and mileage partnerships, Marketing communications, Global contact centres, eCommerce, Triton Programme, Revenue management, AirMiles Travel Company, Travel Shops, BA Holidays, BA prompt Clinics, Corporate communications, BA world Cargo, earth Operations, BA engineering, Information management, BA shares etc. Each division has its own functionalities to perform, goals and objectives to meet which contributes to corporate aims and objectives.DepartmentRe sponsibilityPlanningPlanning fleet, network, schedule, infrastructure, resources, property dissemination mileage partnershipsEnsure that customers can book pay and ticket a booking through the website, contact centres, shops, travel agents around the worldMarketing communicationsMarketing communications, advertising, promotions, gain insight into customer needsGlobal contact centresDelivers services to customers who prefer using the phoneeCommerceMajor projects to broaden the range of minutes customers can do on their own, improve quality of online channelsTriton ProgrammeThe 10 year contract with Amadeus, leading provider of travel industry systemsRevenue managementMonitors, controls, forecasts sales working to improve profitabilityAirMiles Travel CompanyCarries out customer loyalty programmesTravel ShopsProvides personal services and sharp advise from well travelled consultantsBA HolidaysSells holiday packagestravel ClinicsOffers travel health advice and comprehensive vaccinati on serviceCorporate communicationsProtects and manages the global nature ensuring that a wide audience are aware of the airlines news and developments.world CargoProvides freight, mail and courier servicesGround OperationsManagement of client services and terminal operations with safety and securityEngineeringResponsible for aviation maintenance providing full support for the fleetsInformation ManagementResponsible for all IT across the BA group and plays a fundamental role in shaping the future of the airlineBA sharesResponsible for all investor relations tabularize 1 Departmental Analysis of British AirwaysMarket Environment PEST AnalysisThe Airline industry has become extremely warring payable to the work out airline and the current unfavourable economic conditions. All player compete for the market share in an environment where the bargaining powers of customer have change magnitude and there is no control over the powers of fuel suppliers and prices. In the current econom ic conditions there is limited growth in volume and demand for air travel has declined significantly. The PEST analysis shows the external factors that affect the organisation and its change processes. It also reveals the changes the organisation must make in order to remain competitive in indecent market conditions. Thus, this section looks into the external environment of British Airways since change strategies are affected by the factors and changes in the macro environment. Such changes could get hold of about favourable or adverse effect on the companys turnover and growth. The PESTEL framework has been applied to examine the external factors and its have-to doe with on the company.Political and legitimate FactorsDevelopments in the political and legal factors can have a high impact on the airline industry. Political developments include changes in governmental policies, international regulations and legislations, government taxes on air travel, political and economical re lationships with counties, changes in airport and aviation rules etc. Some of the developments have a favourable impact on the company while some others will have an unfavourable impact. The EU policy has increased air travel and therefore has been a positive impact on the airline industry. On the other hand, increase of government taxes has adverse results on the industry since demand for air travel declines due to high airfare. frugal FactorsEconomic developments such as increase in fuel prices, unfavourable currency and interest rates, street corner, inflation, increase in unemployment has a negative impact on British Airways. In such environments leisure travel declines because people have less disposable income and business travel declines because corporate spending is reduced. Also recession negatively impacts on growth of companies in terms of expansions and buying additional aircrafts. On the other hand, changes such as economic boom, deflation could favourably contribute to wards a companys performance.Social and Environmental FactorsAirline industry is constantly under pressure for various environmental pressure groups due to high CO emission, noise and the effects on the climate. Also outbreaks of diseases such as such as Swine Flu can decrease air travel. Another aspect that could reduce air travel is safety related issues such as acts of terrorists and crashes.Technological FactorsChanges in technology have shown negative and positive impacts on the airline industry. The positive impacts have been safety, cost reduction and ease of booking and planning travel online. On the other hand due to new technological developments such as advanced clashing facilities business travel is not necessary to the same extent as before.BA and RyanairBritish Airways aims to operate a high quality service to its customers at a affordable price. It operates long and short haul flights to many destinations around the world and ensures comfort while taking the passenge rs closer to their destination. British airways mainly operate in three areas, namely passenger transport, cargo and mail services. British airways aim to understand its customers needs and operate accordingly. The company has a strong brand image and the employees are expected to work up to its standards. The organisational structure can be regarded as a flat type because it has only one level of hierarchy that separates Managing Directors at the top from bottom-line employees. On the other hand Ryanair operates on a no- frill strategy which means that the passengers are not provided with any superfluous facilities and operates simply as a point to point transportation service. It has grown largely in Europe by attracting customers who prefer low ticket prices thereby reducing the market share of British Airways. It mainly operates short haul flights to destinations which are secondary airports.Factors Affecting Change ManagementAccording to Paton and McCalman (2008) Change managem ent can be defined as a planned process for changing a core function or organization of an enterprise. Change Management is an organized, systematic application of the knowledge, tools, and resources of change that provides organizations with a key process to achieve their business strategy. (Lamarsh 2000). With the aid of technology the industries and products are congregating which means each besotted has to take a very holistic approach to the marketing of goods and services. Paton McCalman (2000).Factors driving changeMost organisations change when internal and external environments change. The factors that initiate the need for organisational change can be two fold. The first factor can be called an External Trigger which involves the activities and innovations of competitors, change in customer requirements, legislation and government policies, and so on. Economic change can create the need for change. Also, due to the EU policies many companies had to change their practices and procedures. Environmental pressure groups that impose pressure due to adverse environmental effects can force a company such as BA to change its processes to make it climate friendly. The second factor can be called the Internal Triggers including new product and service design, innovations, appointments of new directors, new ideas on how to achieve service quality etc (Buchanan D. Huczynski A., 2004). The British Airways privatization program that changed the companys ownership was launched due to the impact from such triggers. The aims and objectives of this programme was to improve the organisations performance and gain a competitive advantage over its competitors. According to the change model described by Lewin, organisational change occurs in three stages. The first stage is called Unfreezing which reduces the forces which maintain behaviour as it is currently and recognition of the need for change occurs. The second stage is called nominal head which is the development of new practices and the implementation of the change. The final stage is named as Refreezing which is stabilizing the changes that occurred and reinforcement through supporting mechanisms. (Mullins, J., L., 1999)Involving PeopleIt is essential that the organisation manages its human resources in a manner that is favourable to the change process. It is important that the employees understand and support the change in order to have a smooth transformation. If the change managers can make the people involved to see the common objectives and mutual benefits that the change will bring about it helps in making the change more successful (Paton McCalum, 2000). However, each individual will react to change in a different manner. The factors that affect how individuals will react to change are manifold, namely the organisational culture, the reasons for change, factors of change, leaders aspects and organisational structure. The change management style and approach are important aspects wi th regards to involving the employees of the organisation. Change management requires a considerable amount of skill and previous experience on the management of the organisation. It is important to consider each individuals perception and attitude towards the process for it to be a success. For example during the second stage of change, BA developed tactical manoeuvre and programs to bring the vision of the top management-level to the bottom-line employees throughout the organisation. Thus the internal structure and systems were changed and also a permanent training center was established to promote round training.StakeholdersIt is important that the company analyses its stakeholders since the change will have an effect on them. Communication is vital to involve all stakeholders in the process so that the change is successful. It is also important to categorise your stakeholders according to their power and interest involving the change. There are some aspects regarding stakeholde rs and the change process that should be taken into consideration. Differentiating and grouping employees and deciding how to deal with different types, planning communication in both directions and also looking after the interests off all individuals. There are mainly foursome types of stakeholders, blockers, sponsors, champions and sleepers Green (2007). Blocker have high power but low level of commitment, while the sponsors have high power and high commitment. Also Champions have high energy and high commitment while sleppers have both low power and low commitment to change. For a successful change it is important to identify the stakeholders with high power and commitment.British Airways has a number of stakeholders who have various interests in the business and from whom the company expects different things. There have been conflicts amidst these stakeholders due to their differing interests as well as formations of coalitions. It can be observed that most stakeholders have a n interest in the organisation performing well. In the in a higher place context it is important that the stakeholders are analysed according to the power and commitment grid so that change can be successful.Planning the changeThe change process must be planned and it is advisable to use models of change and also consider the impacts of resistance to change. Two different change models are discussed in the interest section, namely the Mckinsey 7-S model and Lewins Model. The basic principle of the model is that there are seven internal aspects of an organization that need to be aligned if it is to be successful. The 7S model can be used in a wide variety of situations such as improving the performance of the company. The McKinsey 7S model contains seven interdependent factors which are categorised as hard or soft elements. Hard elements are strategy, structure, systems and soft elements are shared values, skills, style and staff. The Hard elements are easier to identify and warp w hile the soft elements are more difficult to manage but equally important for a successful transformation. The model depicts the interdependencies of these elements in terms of how a change in one element affects the others.According to the model the seven elements must be aligned. In the case of BA, the model can be used to identify what needs to be realigned to improve performance during other changes in the company. What ever the change is this model can be used to understand the interrelationships. Further it can be used to analyse the current position, proposed position and identify the gaps between the two. It is also necessary to adjust these elements to make sure the company whole kit and boodle effectively. Now lets examine Lewins change model. According to Lewin, there are three stages of change in an organisation which are unfreezing, movement, and refreezing.Unfreezing storeyaccordingly, the first step for BA is to unfreeze present pattern of behaviour to manage resistan ce. In this stage change did make an impact on individual level due to the implementation of Downsizing of Workforce policy to restructure the organisation. This policy reduced hierarchy, and allowed worked to be carried out easily thus improving performance. (Shibata., K., 1993) The downsizing was achieved through compassion. BA also introduced training programs such as Putting People First to help line managers and workers understand the change and the requirements of the industry.Movement StageThe second stage of Lewins Model is movement. During this stage BA used tactics and programs to bring the vision of the top management and line employees. In support a number of new systems where implemented. (Goodstein., D., L. Burke, W., W., 1991)Refreezing StageIn the refreezing stage the company stabilized changes by establishing systems that can establish behavioural pattern in the organisation. A new performance appraisal system based on behaviour and results was introduced to encour age customer service. (Goodstein., D., L. Burke, W., W., 1991)Resistance to changeIt is not easy for an organisation change its structure and business processes since any change may lead to some level of resistance by the employees. One of the main causes for resistance is the fear of the unknown and loss of what is familiar. There are four reasons of resistance from employee to organisational change including 1) Parochial self-interest, 2) Misunderstanding and lack of trust, 3) Contradictory assessments, and 4) Low tolerance for change. (Buchanan D. Huczynski A., 2004) BA tried to change behaviour by changing the management style from authoritative to participative. BA wished employees participate more in management decision but since this was unfamiliar employers would fall back to the old patterns.A tactic that was used in BA to manage resistance to change was the HR policy which included training guidelines. Such an HR policy is important in making the employees understand and react positively to change. There is also an example where resistance to change hindered the organisations goals and objectives. In an attempt to cut down cost can compete with low cost airlines BA tried implementing a new payment system and also hiring workers for lower salaries. This created insecurity among the employees which ended in a strike that cost the company in millions in 2000. Therefore handling resistance and the HR aspects of the company is vital to a successful change process.

The King And The Clown | Analysis
The King And The Clown AnalysisThe motion-picture show King and the Clown has touched a typesetters case that is considered as a proscribed and outlawed by the Korean society and yet it has struck a chord with the Korean people. The movieKing and the Clown, has some the most howling(a) and enthralling performances by the pretenders. The movie has a controversial theme of homosexuality which has the potential to upset the emotions and mindsets of many of the conservative Koreans, but each element of the movie is so convincing and perfectly played that the causal idea never seems to look vulgar. It has managed to keep the balance in between too shocking or being overly-exaggerated. There are a muddle of mixed emotions in the movie which are tied to the characters itself. There is love, hatred, jealousy, trust, anger, surprise remorse, aggressiveness. As the movie goes on, the attestant tends to experience all these feelings, and sometimes even imagine himself in the place of the characters. The ability to connect with the audiences despite being set up on such a controversial topic is what sets the movie apart.BackgroundThe movie The King and the Clown has its background set in the Joseon Dynasty. This resembles many of the generic Korean dramas we haves seen in many movies, but the plot here is quite original and well scripted. The story of the movie takes in its center, a band of impecunious and hard-up traveling entertainers. Movies both main characters are Jang-Saeng and Gong-il. They are both lovers. Both of them being of the same sex is quite shocking to many Koreans and also is quite new to be seen in the Korean movies. But the catch here is that Gong-il whose role is being played by actor Lee Jun-ki, has really feminine feature and one could at a thought think of him as a girl and at some moment one almost want to believe that the actor is a girl. Both of the actors have divided a very strong bond throughout the movie. Some of the scenes of the movie has clearly shown the great chemistry shared by both. It seems that they really look out for one another. In the starting, both of them decide to go to Hanyang (now Seoul), in order to expand their talents and present themselves to a lot more people and make their show bigger and better. It is there that they find many other similarly and hugely talented minstrels and then join their act. like a shot to do something new and to gain fame and money, ang-Seang, who is the chief of the troupe, they decide to mock the king and his favorite Nok-Su as this would attract a lot of people to their act. Now as their fame spread, one of the kings official get winds of their act and get them arrested for treason against the state. The official then puts a condition in front of them that they have to perform in front of the king and if he likes their show, their life would be spared. This was in fact a plan of the official to let the king know about the prejudice and corruption spread in his territory through the mocking. The Kings courtNow the role of the King is played by actor Jung Jin-Young who portrays the tyrannical king brilliantly. It is verbalise that the kings character in the movie is based on a real-life king. The king has also got problems of his own and was psychologically disfigured because his mother was forced to commit suicide by the kings of that time and this made him repulsive towards the people and the society. As he grew up, he started showing the signs of unstable caprices of a child who was hurt, wounded and spoiled by that incident. But as the clowns performed, instead of feeling insulted and shameful, the King became very amused with the acts and decided to keep the troupe as court jesters in the kings grand palace. This is unfeignedly magnificent as it shows sides of the king which make us believe as the king was a born actor as by chance got his purple bloodline. This could also be interpreted as the kings real or hidden dream. As ti me passed on the King becomes more and more captivated with Gong-ils circle and sexless beauty. This on the other hand made Jang-Saeng, Nok-su and the ministers feel jealous of Gong-il. The relationship between the two clownKam Woo-Seong has portrayed the role of the unconditional gunman as the masculine clown, Jang-Saeng. Lee Jun-ki has totally and justly become a superstar due to his portrayal of Gong-il who is sensitive and loving, the feminine clown. This has really made us to think that is Lee, Jun-ki gay in real life? This is because of his marvelous performance in the movie. There is so much boldness required to play a character like the one our hero has played. The relationship between the clowns is quite extraordinary. There is a rebellious nature to this dynamics. There is an frantic conflict and a mixture of feelings between the two clowns in the movie Jang-sang and Gong-gil. But this conflict is implied rather than made explicit. This forms an intrinsic element of the movie and has a lot of aroused charge within it. The friendship of Jang-sang and Gong-gil sometimes appear to be platonic Both of them understand and care about one other and the affinity and the link between them defines and to an extent, affet their actions and decisions later. But that same affinity also has its down-side. There is frustration, fixation and passion Jang-sang sulks and hates it when Gong-gil is in the Kings company and prefer it rather than his, and Gong-gil is gloomy and downhearted when Jang-sang isnt around. Their emotional connection is intensified by the script itself and also the viewers interest in their friendship with a lot of intensity given.Directors viewsThe director Lee Jun Ik has already said that the main point of the story was not to raise the issue of homosexuality but the focus was mainly on the life and the worlds of the travelling clowns. It precious to show and also facts say that it was very common for the traveling clowns to engage in sam e-sex relationships in those days. The people were quite poor and it was impossible for them to get a wife in this financial situation. Secondly, there were only men who were traveling in groups together and it was very possible for them to make a bond that was very tight and intimateConclusionThe movie King and the Clown is likely to be said a chronological drama wherein there was lot of emotions attached to it. Also it touched on an issue that is controversial yet is seen vary widely in todays society. Also to say that it had a original plot and extremely brilliant actors. The movie very gracefully and tactfully breached one of the subjects that is always been considered taboo. Also the movie has demonstrated how art imitates life. The clown sexuality is completely and volitionally accepted in the movie. So one can say that this movie may prove to be a milestone for gay rights and teaches about humanities association with life.

Edwards Deming was the person who invented the TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT concept. derive flavour heed refers to maximising customer satisfaction by minimising the breaks. It involves optimal utilisation of resources. It involves rearing of employees to the maximum possible level. The most in-chief(postnominal) aspect of Total Quality commission is that it involves that the errors in merchandise are removed wholly. It involves giving the best to the customer. To give the best to the customer e realthing should be perfect in an organisation. The organisations functioning should be 100% so that the customer can as an end result get 100%. TQM is basically a set of functions which if performed shall ensure that all the customers expectations are exceeded or met.ETISALAT AND TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT APPROACHTotal eccentric attention go up has rick really important in todays world. All customers want better than the best for their money. Todays customer is not easily satisfied. Etisal at has been wise enough to recognise this newborn emerging trend. Etisalat believes that persona is the key to overcome competition in todays modern market. More and more organisations all around the world are looking up to musical note production for overcoming competition. The full(a) tone of voice management field is a new field. It is lock up developing. Etisalat has developed its own ways of quality measurement with passage of time. Etisalat believes that quality improvement is a continuous process. You can never stop improving the quality of the product or service that you are providing. Quality is the internality of any product or service. Total quality management has become very important for Etisalat over the past few years. There has to be a continuous flow of improvements in the services being provided if proper benefits of hail quality management are to be earn. Although it must be noted here that Etisalat does not depend on total quality management for satisfyi ng the needs of its customers and for achieving its target. Total quality management does not solve any managerial issues. (hashmi) Total quality management only seems to cater to the problem of customer satisfaction. Etisalat has customised its total quality management betterment in such a way that it gives a purpose to the company to move ahead and develop its product more not only for the satisfaction of the customer but also for the overall development of the company including the improver in profits agenda. Although at the beginning Etisalat had some problems in adopting this new total quality management approach but then it realised that the economic conditions everywhere are changing and sooner or ulterior the company had to make itself more customer oriented. Etisalats internet providing services were the first to adopt the total quality management approach. Soon the company started seeing imperious changes. The actual number of new connections also got increased. After realising the confirmative affect of Total quality management the same was applied to the mobile service providing sector also. Etisalat also realised that one way to successfully apply the total quality management approach was to improve the quality of equipments being used to provide the services. Earlier the marketing agenda of the company was that it was providing services at the lowest possible cost. Now the agenda is providing the best quality at the lowest price. And this approach has shown tremendous positive results. Moreover the problems should be sorted out as soon as they are found. One should not wait for meetings and discussions to get over them get over the problems as soon as they are found. This is also a relatively new concept which has emerged from total quality management. (hashmi)Proper training of employees is the essence of the total quality management approach. The best possible training needs to be given to the employees for the best possible results. Trai ning enhances the capacity to function. It allows the employees to work on a level which is higher than what they can work on. (stark) The training should be given with regards to the requirements of the job that the employee has to do. Etisalat is using the latest technology avail commensurate in the market to provide to the market the mobile services. Although it increases the capital requirements and cost of the company, but the customers get the best possible services and moreover running cost or cost of providing services is reduced substantially. Etisalat has picked up a new theory from total quality management, this theory involves that the company shouldnt function on the basis of change magnitude the number of customers, it should work on improving the quality of the services it is providing, and the customers exit be attracted on their own if the services being provided are of the best quality. The company should hire only the best educated for properly applying the tot al quality method. Moreover the company in return should arrange for proper education facilities to the community. This will ultimately help the company itself in the long run. The truth is that Total quality management does not create the quality but it creates the process. Total quality management involves a complete change in the functional culture of the people. (stark) It emphasises only and only on quality. The employees at Etisalat had some problem in adopting this new method of working, but as soon as they realised that this was the correct way ahead and it would be giving great rewards in the future they right away accepted it. Etisalats management decided that not only the basic product should be of quality the extra add-ons should also be of the best possible quality. Etisalats management decided that total quality management should be so well adopted by the company that there should be no margin for error at all. Whatever the company is giving to its customers it shou ld be of the best quality, no one else in the market should be giving something or anything better than what Etisalat could provide for.PROBLEMS OF TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT APPROACHSince total quality management is comparatively a new approach people are still working on it. All the firms who are trying to adopt this approach face problems while applying this approach. (stark) Each and every firm tries to explore with this new approach. The management at Etisalat has also introduced its own variations in this approach. One of the major problems which were faced by the mangers at Etisalat was the problem of measurement. There is no proper way which has been developed as of now that can measure the change in quality. It has been hard to measure the proper affects of change due to quality. Managers found it hard to measure whether the changes made in the working of the firm due to the total quality management approach were bringing positive or negative results they ultimately had to r efer to the number bet to find the personal effects of total quality approach. Total quality approach on the other hand emphasises the attention of people away from the numbers to quality. Total quality management is next to useless if it cannot be measured. The change in results must be measured if total quality management approach has to become successful. Moreover it was being realised that it was easier for the middle management and lower working class employees to adjust to the total quality management approach but the speeding management at Etisalat found it hard to do so. This was so because upper management was used to working with numbers. It was hard for the top managers and the owners of the company to shift the very approach towards business. They had to change their very beliefs in business. Although total quality management is supposed to decrease costs, but in reality the management at Etisalat found that implementing this approach had infact increased the cost of p roviding services. Moreover it was found that businesses who are well established like Etisalat and they do not want to innovate a apportion also face problems in applying the total quality approach method. Total quality management approach also increased the companys capital expenditure as it involved getting the best in line equipments. This involves investing huge amounts of money and maybe some smaller companies may not be able to do so. Moreover after applying the total quality management approach the company had to spend hugely on advertisement to let the world pick out of its change in approach towards business. The cost of the final service provided was also increased after applying the total quality management approach. The management tried very hard to avoid increase in price but as we all know that the best comes at a price so this increase in price was unavoidable for the people at Etisalat, and many customers did not approve of the change in costs.RESULTS AND METHOD O F IMPLEMENTING TOTAL QUALITY MANAGEMENT BY ETISALATEtisalat was able to identify a lot of things after implementing total quality management approach. It realised that the approach like all other approaches had both positive and negative effects on the functioning of the company, and also it had double effects on the final figures of the company, although surprisingly this approach had many more positive effects than it had negative ones. It was found that this approach affected everyone who worked for the company. Total quality management approach was completely based on team work. Team work was the essence of total quality management. It was although hard to implement because in such a large corporation as Etisalat it was hard to make everyone co-operate with everyone else. Moreover the management realised that it was actually hard for them to remove their attention from the number game and completely focus it on quality management. It was hard to find on the basis of quality that the firm was underperforming or was doing better than before. It was later found out after a few months of application if total quality management approach that there was a significant increase in the actual numbers of customers. Also there was less number of complaints now. Application of total quality management approach is a hard job moreover it challenges the very foundation of principles of management of business. Business success before and up till very recently was completely based on numbers, the higher the numbers the better it was. The quality hardly mattered. Whatever sold was considered to be of the best quality. With the application of total quality management everything changed. It did not matter anymore to the management at Etisalat whether the numbers increased or decreased they had to concentrate completely on the quality of services that they were utilize to provide. This quality had to be the best. It was a heavy task as it had two aspects attached to it. The fi rst was to actually start providing the best services to the people. This included changing various technological equipments, it involved changing the basic equipments used as raw materials, everything every equipment that the company used should be of the best quality, until and unless this happens it would be hard to give the best possible end result. Secondly the customers needed to be informed in the change of policies of the company. This in itself was a humungous task. The management at Etisalat was changeable that whether the customers would take this approach in a positive manner or not. It had to be conveyed to the public that there was a major change which would take deposit in the way the company functioned. This was very hard because Etisalat has almost 1 billion customers all around the world. But the top management of Etisalat was able to break away out this task properly. Company is now successfully providing the best possible services to its 1 billion customers wh ether in the tele-communication sector or in the internet service providing sector.CONCLUSIONTotal quality management is more of a discipline than anything else. It is concluded that quality is the end product of all the activities undertaken in the total quality management approach. It involves a complete change in the outlook of producers and service providers. It changes their emphasis from mass selling to quality selling. Followers of total quality management believe that providing quality product or service will automatically lead to increased sales. It is important to understand here that providing quality products should not mean that the price of such product can be sky high, the approach should be such that the best quality product should be provided at the best possible price. The pricing should be correct because even if the product is the best in the market but it is overpriced it will not sell. wherefore this involves the working of financial analysts with total qualit y management approach experts. A balance between the two approaches must be struck. Etisalat has understood the importance of total quality management approach. The management of Etisalat are working more and more towards this approach now. They are also trying to communicate this change in their policies in the best possible ways to their customers. The customers have become very demanding all over the world these days and total quality management approach seems to be the only possible way to satisfy the needs of the modern customer.

Homophobia - Educating Against Heterosexism :: Teaching Education Essays
Homophobia. It is defined as an irrational fear of sexual minorities including gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and transexual individuals. It exists in our society, although at times it seems that our safe harbor within the university bubble contains people that ar both rational and educated preventing homophobia from becoming a reality. Denying that homophobia and discrimination based on sexual orientation atomic number 18 problems and identifying them as issues for other people can be extremely problematic. It is this type of thinking that perpetuates the status quo of heterosexual privilege. There have been several incidents in the foregone few weeks that have brought the existence of homophobia on our college campus and others as well to the forefront of many peoples minds. The incidents subsequently mentioned demonstrate the necessity of better breeding and understanding of sexual minorities not only for their own advancement towards equality, but for the growth of het erosexual individuals as well and progression away from the status quo.To yield a truly complete and fulfilling educational experience at Colby and other similar schools it is necessary to provide educational materials on all lifestyles and examples of diversity that exists not only in our own culture, but others as well. I believe that facilitating this complete learning experience leads to developing the individual mind morally as well as academically. I would argue that it is becoming more and more essential for our schools to provide the means for the moral development of our youth and young adults. We are living in a society where we are constantly bombarded by messages from the media, church, and even family that normalize only one way of living. It is necessary for there to be at least one facilitator of expanded thinking in peoples lives and for many college students and youth this can be found in the populace of academia.Although I believe inclusiveness of sexual minorit ies is essential to a successful education, I demand that an institution such as Colby needs to do even more than this. The inclusion of sexual minorities is only a part of the larger picture of what needs to be accomplished to build a diverse and accepting community of interests here at Colby. The college needs to become an institutional ally. Colby needs to do more than passively support gay, lesbian, intersexed, transexual, transgender, and questioning (GLBITTQ) issues on campus, it needs to take a stand on these issues and demand that there is progress to begin to disrupt the institutionalized heterosexism that currently exists.
